YouTube Content ID identifies when your audio tracks or your videos are used in UGC videos on the YouTube platform and automatically monetizes this content on your behalf.

How does Content ID Work

YouTube Content ID is a program created to allow copyright owners to easily identify and manage their content on YouTube. It's quite simple: 

1. Copyright owners provide their audio and/or video recordings to YouTube by uploading their videos.
2. These Audio or Video Fingerprints are then integrated into a database containing millions of tracks of all kinds.
3. When a user posts a new video on YouTube, it is compared to the YouTube database files.
4. If there is an audio or video match, the matching policy applied to the video is applied and the copy is monetized on behalf of the Copyright owner of the original video.

Eligibility

Not all content is appropriate for YouTube Content ID. Consider the following points before delivering your content to this service:

You must have exclusive copyright rights to the material

The following examples are ineligible for YouTube AudioFingerprint:

1. Content licensed non-exclusively from a third party (uncleared samples, "type-beats", use of raw material from other content, acapella/instrumental versions, speech, etc.)
2. Content released under Creative Commons or similar free/open licenses
3. "Royalty-free" production music libraries
4. Public domain footage, recordings, or compositions
5. Clips from other sources used under fair use principles
6. Video gameplay footage (by other than the game’s publisher)

Content must be sufficiently distinct

The following examples are ineligible for YouTube Audio Fingerprint:

1. Karaoke recordings, remasters, and soundalike recordings
2. Cover of instrumentals and/or with covered lead vocals
3. Unofficial Remixes, Re-arrangements of an original track not published on any official release of the original artist
4. Sound effects, soundbeds (nature sounds, generic sounds, etc.), or production loops

Content must be provided as individual tracks for each piece of intellectual property

1. Compilations
2. Continuous DJ mixes
3. Mashups
4. Countdown lists
5. Full album sound recordings

Please note: Even if you exclusively own all of the content within these types of examples in all territories, you must separate them into individual components, songs, or videos.

Consequences of YouTube Content ID / Audio Fingerprint Abuse

If YouTube detects ineligible content for YouTube Audio Fingerprint, they will instantly take down the content and may block your ability to deliver new content to YouTube AudioFingerprint.

Spotify for Artists is an interface that gives artists and labels more control over their performance and image on Spotify.

It allows artists to customize their artist picture and header, to claim their profile (giving them the “verified” blue check mark) and to add-in a bio.

Through this platform, Labels can also follow their artists' statistics and presence in the store, enabling them to better assess their audience and help their artists connect with their followers in the best way.

Getting Access to Spotify for Artists

If you're an artist

Go to https://artists.spotify.com/c/access/artist to claim your profile and start using Spotify for Artists. 

If you're a Label

Since July 2020, Spotify has discontinued the Spotify Analytics platform, which used to give Labels access to their artists' performance statistics on Spotify. 
To replace this tool, they have created a Label-oriented access to Spotify for Artists, which enables artists and their team to work together on getting the most out of Spotify.

Follow these tips to find your music on Instagram:

1. Go to your Instagram profile and click on the "Story" button at the bottom center.
2. Choose Stories from the list of options.

3. Click on Music

From here you can search by:

- Artist name

- song title,

or even ISRC number. This is especially useful if you have difficulty finding your music by artist name or song title.

Search for ISRC

To search by ISRC, enter "isrc:" in the search field, followed by your ISRC number without spaces or hyphens.

This should allow you to view any publication correctly present on Instagram, even when searching by title gives no results.

Please note that searches on the platform are based on an algorithm over which we have no control. The more your fans search for and listen to your album, the more likely it will start to appear higher in searches.

When you create a new release in your Backstage, you should pay special attention to the information you indicate in the Promotion tab. Even though this tab is not mandatory for your release submission, it is highly recommended that you fill it in thoroughly, especially for your key releases.

The information in this tab is not delivered to the platforms, but is used by our teams for eventual promotional pitches to the DMS. If you wish to maximize your release's chances to have a successful pitch, here is some advice on how to correctly fill in the fields of the Promotion tab :

1. Write a small description of the release (10 to 15 lines), making sure to indicate the following elements:
   • Context of the release (Is the track a part of an album? Track dedicated to the fans? Etc.)
   • Artist's history (context + sales history)
   • The project's description in a few words.
     
   • Read more about the specific elements you need to deliver us through Backstage.
2. Complete the Promotion/Marketing information, paying attention to the following : 
   • Organize and distinguish the different promo/marketing media strategies by media type (TV, Radio, press, etc.)
   • Do not mention specific Music platforms, this information is to be noted on the "context" part of your description.
   • Always indicate your artist's social media reach
3. Make sure to include any concerts taking place on the year of the release being pitched
4. Finally, make sure to send us your release at least 6 weeks prior to the release date

Please note that, even with our team's commitment to deliver the best possible services, we can't guarantee that the pitch will be accepted by the platforms, as every pitch is subject to the editorial discretion of the DMS. However, by thoroughly filling in the information of the Promotion tab you will maximise your chances by making sure we can represent your project as well as possible.

You may eventually stumble upon content that belongs to you but is being monetized by another party. If the fraudulent content infringes on your copyrights you may file a content claim directly with the DMS (Digital Music Services).

Content claims, also known as DMCA notices, are filed in a different way according to the platform on which you detect the fraudulent content. Here are is the procedure you must follow according to the DMS:

The procedure to follow depends on the current status of the release. Choose the one that suits your situation:

The release is already delivered to the platforms

To take down your release from the Digital Music Services, please send an e-mail to your Label Manager specifying the following:

• The UPC of the release(s) you want to takedown
• The stores on which you want your release(s) to be taken down.
• Why you want to take it down

Once Believe confirmed to have sent your takedown, please expect 2 to 5 business days for your releases to be removed from the stores.

Also note that your releases will be not removed at the same time from all stores. Each store takes a different amount of time to perform takedowns, according to their own capability to deal with the takedown requests they are addressed.

The release has been submitted but not delivered to the platforms yet

You may ask the Support team to delete it for you. See also "how to format your requests to the Support team".

Your release is still a draft in your Backstage

You may delete it by going to "Catalog / Drafts" and clicking on the trash can icon at the right of your release.

A Legal Claim occurs when a third party notifies Believe (directly or through the Store) of a rights infringement.  

In order to protect you against any potential liability in court, legal actions and/or damages, a preventive takedown of the release will be performed on all audio stores until the issue is resolved with the complainant.   

How to proceed if the claim is not justified

If the legal claim is not justified and you hold the exclusive rights to the release, we recommend you to: 

1. Contact immediately the complainant to confirm your rights to the content and to ask them to promptly retract their claim (claimant email contact is available in the email notification sent by Believe). The claimant will have to contact Believe or the Store to state they retract their Legal Claim.  
2. Respond to Believe at the earliest to confirm you own the exclusive rights to the content (for each line) and return the Indemnification letter signed (attached to our email) 
3. If the claimant is not responding, escalate your issue to the rights management team in Believe with all the e-mails and documentation exchanged with them as evidence. We also encourage you to take further legal actions against them.  

As soon as the Legal Claim is retracted, Believe and the Store will be able to reinstate your content. 

Your Label Manager is copied to the Legal Claim email notification you may receive and is able to guide you in this resolution process. 

How to proceed if the claim is justified

If you don’t hold the rights to the content, we recommend you to: 

1. Confirm to Believe that you don’t own the rights to this content, and we’ll keep the content taken down. 
2. Negotiate a retraction of the legal claim with the complainant. 
3. Review your existing catalogue with your Label Manager to make sure there is no more infringing content to prevent you from any other legal claims. 

Frequently Asked Questions 

What is the use of the indemnification letter?  

If the indemnification letter signed is received on time by Believe's rights management team, there won’t be any preventive takedown of the content on the other Stores by Believe.  

Please note the following:

• For the Store who performed a preventive takedown of your content on their platform (such as Spotify, Deezer or Apple when no response after 5 business days), the only way to have the content reinstated on their platforms is to ensure the claimant contacts the store to retract their claim.
• Believe has no control regarding the Sore’s decision. Therefore, even after confirmation of the rights by the client, the Store may decide to keep the release down and to make it sellable only after the retraction of the claim. 

Why is my content not live even though I have signed the indemnification letter? 

• If the store has performed a preventive takedown (for example Spotify, Deezer or Apple when no response) and you did not contact the claimant to resolve the issue, the content will remain taken down. 
• If you don’t own the exclusive rights, the content will remain taken down. 

I own the exclusive rights, but claimant is not responding. What should I do? 

Escalate the issue to the rights management team with the documents (rights on claimed content) and exchange of conversation between claimant and label to serve as evidence.
